The survival of a culture is dependent on two things: kupuna (grandparent, ancestor) willing to pass on their knowledge and `opio (youth, youngster) ready to learn. While there can be no substitute for the oral tradition -- books, videos and other media can provide an invaluable resource in the documentation and preservation of different aspects of the hula and the Hawaiian culture in general.
